The Kid’s Christmas with us is over already! We had a nice dinner at my mom’s last night and many presents were given all around, to the satisfaction of all. Gone is his greed from previous years, and he seems genuinely happy with the loot he got (which is the point after all!).

I’ve got a lot of work to do before my vacation can start, but I love the work, so… Yet the plan holds: the Glen Fiddich’s been purchased and not yet opened, the huge stack of graphic novels is waiting.

2008 has been a year focused on health (and lack thereof) for me, and it’s not over yet: I’m having a root canal done in early January. I’m on antibiotics now (and no, it doesn’t prevent me from drinking: do your research as I did and you’ll discover it’s a myth that alcohol decreases the action of penicillin! I’m careful though, not to tax my liver and not to get drunk too much, too fast) and the pain should recede today already. The good news is that between my elbow, my back, my tooth (sometimes painful, sometimes irradiating pain throughout my skull) and the stomach cramps I had last week, my brain and body seem to have struck a deal: one pain takes precedence while the others go into background mode, so I only have to deal with the pain currently on top and the rest leave me alone. I take it in stride. The only thing that annoys me is that I don’t always feel on top of things, as pain dulls my edge. Still, no big deal, I’ve learned so much about managing pain I could probably write a book about it.

It’s snowing again, and I love it. I’m such a winter person: I love the biting cold and huge flakes. I plan on snowshoeing a lot during my vacation. All that’s missing with all that snow is a fireplace.

Later: One more reason to love snow! Since the roads are quite bad all over, The Kid’s mom and Herb have somewhat changed our plans, so that The Kid stays with us until Wednesday. Hurray! (Seriously, when he first left to love with his mom, it felt like a much needed break, but now… I’ve had time to really miss him!).I’m working this afternoon, and my two men are outside taking care of the snow on the steps, balcony and car.

I spent last week at a client’s. Now that I’m home again, the cats are extra in love and extra purry. It’s all good! :-)

My girlfriend is going through your nightmare as we speak. It’s not 100% over but I’ve had the horror of watching a grown, 49-year-old woman weeping and moaning in front of me because of the pain . . . I’m in sheer terror, if only empathetically. I know that if I were in that much pain, the balcony is six floors up . . .

It’s absolutely terrifying to see another human being, especially one you love, in such uncontrollable pain.

For a time just before Christmas Eve we both thought she had an abscess . . . she was taking Clindamycin and Percocet but NOTHING worked . . .

Then when we finally managed to see a specialist (email nick@montrealfood.com for an excellent root canal guy) it turned out it was her WISDOM TOOTH . .. no infection, hence no effect from antibiotics, and intractable pain . . .

Ouf, I sincerely hope you get better SOON.

Sorry, I stumbled on your blog but . . . get better SOON. My girlfriend and I will thank you for it (Minus one for the Devil)

Oh yuck, poor her! I had all four wisdom teeth pulled when I was 17. All at once because I told them, if you give me two appointments, I probably won’t come for the second one. I hope she’s better or soon will be too!

After five days of taking antibiotics every six hours (yes, waking up in the night — I know how important adherence to treatment is/can be!), the pain went away. I’ll be glad when it’s all over though. For a couple of nights, I took morphine we had left over from a surgery just so I could sleep, because my headache was a lot more of a migraine and it kept me up. Just glad to be better!
