The only bicycle I ever got new was a blue ten-speed bike I got at the end of fifth grade (I was ten). Aside from that, I’ve had old bikes, quasi-novelty bikes, a too-small junior frame, a bike salvaged from the trash, and now I own a very nice banana-seat bike with no cushion and very little braking action. So I haven’t biked in a while. A long while. And my arm has been injured for almost a year now, meaning I’ve done very little over the last year, physically speaking. I decided to treat myself to a new bicycle. Herb realized I needed a few specific things, like a front suspension and a bicycle that did not put the weight on my arms/hands/wrists, but on my overly generous rump. I picked a bike, we were going to order it, and then… I realized there is no effing way I can bring a heavy bike up our already-dangerous twisty stairs. I felt like an unreasonable child, wanting to pout and flail my limbs in an “oh why oh why me” litany. Disappointment doesn’t describe it. Mild depression would be closer. BUT!! I’m a big girl, I can find solutions. No point in looking for a lighter bike, as I need the (heavy) suspension. No point going from store to store (shopping depresses me). I had to take a different approach… And I did: if I can’t lift the bike, the bike can stay on the ground. Not locked in a come-and-steal-me fashion, but safely inside the locked shed, in the locked backyard shared by my downstairs neighbours. I spoke to them, they agreed to help me by moving stuff around in the shed, and this morning I went and ordered by beautiful blue Navigator 3.0 WSD. Hurray!
