Regarding accomodations

Herb was very lucky at the hospital this time around. He was only staying the night, and when that happened last year, he got to share the intimate sounds of three other grown men (never mind the nurses’ visits to the other three) and basically couldn’t sleep as a result. This year, we were ready. We asked for a private room (no can do). What he got was a double (semi-private) room, but (and this is a crucial but) the man in the next bed was getting transferred to another bedroom. So it turned out that, for something like $75, Herb got an adjustable bed next to a window (with a nice view of the city, no less) in a room all to himself. He had his mp3 player filled with trance so he could trip out on Demerol while watching the sun come up, and a big bedroom all to himself. And the price included meals, AND kind people just came and took away his urine and brought back an empty bottle every time (and a dude offered to bathe my man! Yes, an employee… we hope!). This, last night, led us to a revelation: a hospital room is exactly like a hotel room… without the dignity.
